OLDER people who are physically active are at lower risk of developing breast and prostate cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and depression. The findings are contained in a review of all published reviews of studies that assessed the relationship between physical activity and health in adults aged 60 years or older.

The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) submitted the below response to the recent Food Safety Authority of Ireland consultation in respect of regulations to be made under sections 12 and 13 of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act 2018.
The focus of the consultation is a change in law which would provide the Department with a power to designate an event taking place in Northern Ireland as a “special event.” The Department, having designated an event as a “special event”, would then have the power to vary permitted hours for the sale of alcoholic drinks at the event.

The New Strategic Direction for Alcohol and Drugs Phase 2 (NSD-2) is a cross-departmental strategy led by the Department of Health, which aims to reduce the level of alcohol and drug-related harm in Northern Ireland. The overall aim of the review was to evaluate the impact of NSD-2 on its aims of preventing and addressing harm related to substance misuse in Northern Ireland.
